C.P was 30 year old male, referred by his orthopedic doctor, with low back pain. His pain had been there for about a year and he had steadily pulled back from the exercises he enjoyed like soccer or running as a result of the pain. His doctor had presented surgery to him, after he tried various injections, medications and different therapies without success. However, he really wanted to avoid the surgery so he wanted to give PT one last chance.
Initial Examination
His physical therapy examination not only showed weakness of his core muscles but also a lot of tightness around specific segments of his spine.
Treatment
He had PT 1x/wk for 10 weeks and we found that his body responded much better to gently core strength training only when preceded by gentle and sustained stretches and spinal decompression. He was educated on how to get the same effect with spinal traction for home use.
Outcome
By the end of his therapy he was able to return to playing soccer 1x/wk with zero to minimal back pain and surgery was no longer warranted. Please read his testimonial here for more details.
