B.D was a 55 year old female with about 2 months of right shoulder pain. She couldn’t remember any particular injury, but it just seemed that her shoulder started getting stiffer, more painful and weaker.
Initial Examination
With her physical therapy examination, a 60% loss in range of motion of her shoulder was shown. The difficulty and pain she had reaching her arm overhead and behind her back was also evident
Treatment
She had PT 2x/wk for the 4 weeks and decreased it to 1x/wk for another 4 weeks. We focused heavily on manual therapy to release the tension around her shoulder, and upper back, started strengthening of her core and rotator cuff muscles and established her home routine to maintain the gains we were seeing in therapy. We also referred her to and worked closely with a physical medicine and rehabilitation doctor for faster results. Those treatments included targeted injections to break up scar tissue in her shoulder as we continued to PT.
Outcome
The outcome was a full return of her shoulder mobility with no pain or functional problems. She also returned to yoga and her group exercise classes without difficulty.
