Stretching like a hammock, the pelvic muscles connect the tailbone in the back to the pubic bone in the front. They are divided into superficial and deep layers.
The superficial layer consists of the:
- Ischiocavernosus muscle
- Bulbospongiosus muscle
- Superficial transverse perineal muscle
- External anal sphincter
The deep muscles include the:
- Coccygeus
- Obturator internus
- Piriformis
- Levator ani (i.e. Kegel) muscles
